Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has directed officials at the National Testing Agency (NTA) to ensure the NEET UG 2026 re-exam is conducted in a “secure, seamless and foolproof manner,” leaving no room for the irregularities that forced the cancellation of the original examination. The minister issued these directions on May 19, 2026, during a high-level review meeting focused on preparations for the re-examination scheduled for June 21, 2026.
Pradhan made clear to officials that there could be “no compromise” on examination security and fairness, directing them to ensure that every loophole identified during the earlier examination is fully addressed before the re-test proceeds.
Why Was NEET UG 2026 Cancelled?
The NTA cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination held on May 3 after receiving investigation inputs from central agencies. A “guess paper” was recovered from Rajasthan containing questions that closely matched the actual paper, pointing to an organized breach of the examination process. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the allegations, has arrested more than 10 accused persons in connection with the case. The cancellation affected over 22 lakh registered candidates across the country.
Pradhan confirmed the government has activated a high-level framework to ensure the entire re-examination process is conducted with absolute transparency, expressing full confidence in the CBI to uncover the details of the irregularities.
What Security Measures Are in Place for the Re-Exam?
The NTA and Ministry of Education have announced several significant upgrades ahead of the NEET UG 2026 re-exam. Security arrangements include GPS-tracked vehicles for paper transport, AI-based CCTV surveillance, biometric verification of candidates, and 5G signal jammers at examination centres.
Authorities have also placed all experts involved in preparing the re-exam question paper under strict isolation at a secure, undisclosed location, a measure aimed at preventing any possibility of a pre-exam leak.
The re-exam will be conducted from 2 PM to 5:15 PM, offering a total duration of 195 minutes — 15 minutes longer than the original slot — to accommodate candidate verification and administrative formalities without eating into actual exam time. The NTA has also expanded rough work space in the question paper booklet from two pages to four.
Candidates will not need fresh registration or pay any additional fee for the re-examination, as existing details remain valid.
What Comes Next for NEET Aspirants
Apart from security arrangements, the minister reviewed support facilities for candidates, directing officials to ensure proper transportation, drinking water, and other essential amenities are available on examination day, acknowledging the stress students have already endured.
Looking further ahead, the Education Minister confirmed that NEET UG is expected to shift to a computer-based examination format from 2027 to improve transparency and reduce the risk of malpractice.
With over 22 lakh students preparing to take the NEET UG 2026 re-exam on June 21, the government’s multi-layered security framework and ministerial oversight signal a determined effort to restore credibility in India’s most critical medical entrance examination. Candidates are advised to monitor the official NTA website at neet.nta.nic.in for admit card updates and examination guidelines.
