Delhi’s 2026‑27 Budget Allocates ₹19,148 Crore to Education, Funds Cycles, Laptops, and Smart Classes

New Delhi, March 2026 – The Delhi government has pegged its education allocation at ₹19,148 crore for the 2026‑27 fiscal year, marking one of the highest outlays on human capital in the city’s budget history. The massive outlay aims to improve access, retention, and learning outcomes in government schools by expanding digital infrastructure, providing learning devices, and supporting students’ commute through a cycle‑distribution scheme.

Key components of the outlay

A major chunk of the budget will be used to roll out smart classrooms in nearly 1,200 government schools, equipping them with projectors, interactive displays, and high‑speed internet connectivity. The government also plans to distribute over 1.5 lakh laptops and tablets to meritorious and economically disadvantaged students, especially in Classes 9 to 12, to facilitate online learning and skill‑based courses.

Additional funds have been earmarked for an “Education Cycle Scheme,” which will provide free bicycles to students living more than 2 km from their schools, particularly in outer Delhi and rural‑fringe areas. Officials say this will not only reduce drop‑out rates but also ease the burden of daily travel for low‑income families.

Focus on equity and digital access

The budget also includes provisions for teacher training in digital pedagogy, upgraded library resources, and support for students with disabilities through assistive technologies and barrier‑free infrastructure. Education Minister Atishi described the allocation as a “multi‑year leap” towards achieving universal quality education in Delhi, saying, “From cycles to smart classrooms, this budget is about making learning more accessible, engaging, and future‑ready.”
