India’s IITs Shine in QS World University Rankings 2026: IIT Delhi jumps to 123rd globally (top in India), with strong performance in subject rankings and research output.

New Delhi, April, 2026 – Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have once again demonstrated their global excellence in the QS World University Rankings 2026, with IIT Delhi emerging as the country’s top-ranked institution at the 123rd position worldwide. This marks a significant jump of 27 places from its 150th rank in 2025, reflecting the institute’s remarkable progress in academic reputation, research output, and international outlook.

IIT Delhi achieved an overall score of 65.5, with a notable academic reputation score of 67.9. It now stands alongside leading global institutions and has secured the top spot among all Indian universities. IIT Bombay followed closely at 129th globally, while IIT Madras ranked third among Indian institutions at 180th. A record number of Indian institutes featured in the rankings, underscoring the rising quality of higher education in the country.

The QS Subject Rankings 2026 further highlighted IIT Delhi’s dominance. The institute broke into the global top 50 in five major engineering and technology subjects and retained its position as India’s No. 1 institution in Engineering & Technology with a global rank of 36. It also performed strongly in Natural Sciences (91st) and Social Sciences & Management (84th). Strong citations per faculty and employer reputation contributed to these gains, indicating enhanced research impact and industry recognition.

Education experts attribute this success to consistent investments in cutting-edge research infrastructure, faculty development, and international collaborations. “IIT Delhi’s climb reflects India’s growing prowess in STEM education and innovation,” said Prof. Rakesh Kumar, a higher education analyst. The institute has intensified efforts in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, sustainable technologies, and interdisciplinary research, resulting in higher research output and global citations.

Other IITs including IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Roorkee also featured prominently, with several improving their positions. The strong showing is expected to boost confidence among prospective students and international faculty seeking opportunities in India.

As global competition intensifies, Indian IITs continue to bridge the gap with top Western universities through quality research and academic excellence. Officials noted that sustained focus on innovation, diversity, and global partnerships will be key to further improvements in future rankings.
