IIT Delhi has entered the global top 50 in five major subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, marking a major leap for India’s premier engineering institute. The rankings, released on March 25, 2026, place IIT Delhi as the top‑ranked Indian institution in the broad Engineering & Technology category at 36th position globally.

Subjects in the global top 50

Among the five subjects that have broken into the world’s top 50 are Electrical Engineering (ranked 36), Mechanical Engineering (44), Computer Science (45), Chemical Engineering (48), and Civil Engineering (50). Broader subject‑wise strength

The institute is also listed among the world’s top 100 in the broader areas of Natural Sciences (91) and Social Sciences & Management (84).

Institutional and national impact

Officials at IIT Delhi have described the rankings as validation of its focus on world‑class but affordable education that produces leaders in academia, industry, and government. At the national level, India now holds 27 top‑50 subject‑wise positions in QS 2026, with IITs and other institutes driving the country’s rising presence in global higher‑education rankings.
