The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced optional advanced levels in Mathematics and Science starting academic year 2026-27, paired with a comprehensively restructured Class 9 curriculum to foster deeper learning and flexibility.
CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh revealed details at a national webinar attended by 10,000 educators. “This caters to diverse aptitudes—basics for all, advanced for the gifted,” Singh stated. From Class 9, students choose standard or advanced streams: advanced Maths delves into calculus, probability, and linear algebra; Science covers genetics, nanotechnology, and experimental design—30% more rigorous with project work.
The Class 9 overhaul, effective immediately for new sessions, trims 12% factual overload, infusing coding, environmental studies, financial literacy, and AI fundamentals per NEP 2020. Internal assessments rise to 40%, emphasising competencies. Digital textbooks and AR modules launch on cbseacademic.nic.in; 1 lakh teachers get online training.
Serving 2.5 crore students in 29,000 schools, the changes target JEE/NEET prep and global benchmarks. Pilots in Delhi-NCR schools yielded 18% score gains. Parents welcome choice but seek rural tech support.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan praised: “India’s classrooms go world-class.” Amid criticism over resource gaps, CBSE promises equity grants.
This positions CBSE as an innovation leader.
