AI‑Powered Personalized Learning Rolled Out in 15,000 Schools to Boost Student Outcomes

New Delhi, March, 2026 – The Union Ministry of Education has launched a nationwide AI‑powered personalised learning program, now being implemented in 15,000 government and aided schools across India. The initiative aims to tailor teaching to individual student needs, improve learning outcomes, and reduce the rural‑urban education gap in the early stages of the academic year.

How the system works

The AI‑powered platform uses diagnostic assessments at the start of each term to map every student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning pace in core subjects such as Mathematics, Science, and Language. Based on this data, the system generates customised lesson plans, practice exercises, and real‑time feedback for both teachers and learners. Teachers can view dashboards showing class‑level analytics and intervene where students are struggling, while students receive adaptive content on tablets or low‑cost smartphones via the government’s DIKSHA‑AI interface.

Initial rollout and impact

The first phase of the rollout covers 15,000 schools spanning 18 states, with priority given to educationally disadvantaged districts and remote areas with limited internet connectivity. Pilot runs in select states over the past year showed a 15–20% improvement in foundational numeracy and literacy scores among participating students, compared with control groups using conventional methods. Education officials say the AI system is also helping teachers save time on grading and lesson planning, allowing them to focus more on interactive and conceptual teaching.

Challenges and future scale‑up

Experts note that challenges such as device availability, teacher training, and data‑privacy safeguards remain critical as the program expands. The government has committed to training over 1.5 lakh teachers in AI‑assisted pedagogy and upgrading digital infrastructure in schools by 2027. If evaluations continue to show strong gains, policymakers plan to extend the personalised-learning model to over 1 lakh schools in the coming years, positioning AI as a core tool in India’s New Education Policy‑driven classroom transformation.
